About Concerts Music Texts Press

Markus Krispel

started his public musical activities as part of the Viennese Bands „LICHT“ ('Syntaktic Records'/A) and „RON BOP“, released next to it solo on MC under the alias of „Der Polizist“ and „Lesco Lak“, homerecording projects with all kinds of Instruments he could find and got interested in.
For some time he ran the Impro duo “Vögel“ (guit. & sax) with Alexander Kasses (drums) ('Schnapsidee Records'/A) and blew the organ pipes in pieces of Peter Jakober, Vienna based Composer.
Since 2008 he plays bass in the Heavy-, Doom- Band „[[[ALTAR:THRON]]]“ („ROCK IS HELL“/A) with Franz Zar (guit. & voice).

At some point he got seriousely into the Alto Saxophone and joined the „Neu New York Music Institute” at Celeste, Vienna, invented 2005 by Marco Eneidi, today called the `Monday Improvisers Session, Vienna' and still taking place every monday night at the same venue.
With the saxophone, his main instrument, he works in diverse constellations as an improvising musician, as well as playing solo concerts with a high interest in the sonic exploration of the instrument, related to the acoustic offers of the certain space, it´s resonance and the cumulation of recepted energies of attention. He likes to include awarness of the social situation in a space and the potential use of the whole range of dynamics of his actual instrument in his play.
He is interested in the on-going developing process of flexible, harmonical intuition and rhythmical diversity, adapted in his continuous practice on the saxophone, staying in transition, drawing from influences of music from all over the world, from different times and simply from intense 'contact' with sounds in general.

PUT - Inexhaustible Editions (SLO)

Reviews:

Richard Herbst, freiStil, Juli/August 2018

* Contemporary free jazz item from the label Edition FriForma, which is a sub-label of Inexhaustible Editions in Slovenia. Put contains a single 40-minute performance from the trio of Markus Krispel, Matija Schellander and Szilveszter Miklós in a live recording made in Ljubljana. It seems this threesome have been working at their craft and bonding closely through a series of live concerts in eastern Europe, touring Serbia, Croatia and the Czech Republic; some of these were organised under the aegis of the “Borderless Dissonance” concert series. I found this record very appealing in a dour sort of way; it’s not out to prove something about the heat and energy of free jazz, and instead there are many awkward pauses and difficult angles which they have to negotiate. This may be something of a relief, as I sometimes feel there are too many people trying the “energy jazz” thing in the contemporary round, and they mostly end up with clouds of loud noise which lead nowhere. Free playing ought to have some sort of edge to it (e.g. political, social, artistic); I worry it’s in danger of becoming too glib a tongue. Not so with Markus Krispel and his sidemen¹, who almost seem to be inventing a reason to play together before our very eyes, respectfully but cautiously mapping out common ground. This may reflect something about their respective backgrounds; Krispel, the Austrian alto and baritone sax player, is apparently self-taught as a musician (the liner notes describe him as a “wild autodidact”), and his musical tastes are such that he sees no conflict in adding his sax work to the band [[[Altar:Thron]]], who play experimental metal. As we listen to his halting phrases and slightly ungainly textures, I find much to enjoy in his unconventional style. He’s not freighted down with chops, be-bop structures, or the slickness that has afflicted many American stars since the ascent of Wynton Marsalis. Could be that Krispel’s getting closer to the true “tongue” of the jazz idiom than many more established players
. Then there’s the bassist, Matija Schellander, also Austrian, described here as a “conceptualist”; it’s true he studies computer music, and has also played in that highly unusual group Rdeča Raketa who made the nifty Wir Werden LP in 2012. There’s something so austere and strict about his work on this record that he makes the sax player seem positively baroque, and that’s no mean achievement. The drummer Szilveszter Miklós seems to be the only one of the trio more steeped in jazz traditions, and he’s been playing with the Grencsó Open Collective in Budapest for about ten years. What I like here is his uncluttered, punchy technique; never a wasted beat, and each stroke tapped in firmly with a certain no-nonsense tone. All of this amounts to music which, as hinted at earlier, is full of rough edges, gaps, and unfinished surfaces; at times, it’s a miracle the work hangs together at all, so tenuous are the connections. Some may find this a frustrating listen (why doesn’t the music get going more often?), but it’s just right for me. Will look for further developments from this trio with interest.
¹ I use the term advisedly. / Ed Pinsent, The Sound Projector, 2 January 2019

Reviews:

[Bad Alchemy 90 rbd]

* Expressiv geht es auf dieser CD zu. Margret Unknown ((In) the Abyssity of the Grounds u.a.) und Markus Krispel ([[[Altar:Thron]]]) spielen sich im Duo in eindeutig höhere Sphären, was auch die Untertitel der einzelnen Nummern versprechen, z.B. Legion! I recieved your false promises. Thousand voices, the fragments of HIS holy grace, glowing ashes, WHITE HEAT has been brought upon thee (Mea Culpa..).

(Zipo, www.aufabwegen.de)

* Awkee: )))))((((( is just 'Margaret Unknown' and 'Markus Krispel', and {} is a amalgam of freejazzy saxophones (alto, tenor and bariton, no less) and 'concrete' guitar parts (concrete like concrete .. 'Beton' in german), a voice, and electronics .. and is that strange ? That nickname I mean, the CD title and this kind of music? No. (The things that are strange & the things that are not. The mobydickalbum turned out not to exist anymore but her facebook page did. And nevernevernever I received a message that the 'belfamielje' was lifted) (I think she is dead) (I think she is hiding) (Randy Newman, anyone?) (in my soul she is dead) The deconstruction of the WORD and the deconstruction of music. Thrown back at itself: Merely speechsigns AND SO music that merely referes to itself. That is not totally without presedent or tradition. )))))((((( fishes in waters where as well 'Little Women' fishes in, and before that as well fellows like Karel Appel, The Nihilist Spasm Band, Wild Classical Music Ensemble, The Spontaneous Music Ensemble of Derek Bailey, Pat Metheny, Gregg Bendian and Paul Wertico with their, as far as I know, only collaborative project: the widely maligned 'Sign of 4'. (come on: apply Deleuze to the fine arts (god, hear me) & where else can you end up but here?) Is it 'bad noise'? Yes, of course it is bad noise! But little in the world tikkles so nicely in my ear and on my skin as 'bad noise' of this kind and PHUK knows that, with the arrival of the pale woman, one needs not much more then )))))(((((‘s {} on ten & on repeat.
